Overview of Woody Biomass Management

A main outcome of the Red Feather Lakes Area Wildfire Defense Project will be enhancing community capacity to deal with post-treatment woody biomass through the facilitation of woody biomass reduction community events and improvements in community capability.

“Woody biomass” is defined as the by-products of forest maintenance and hazardous fuels treatments, in forestlands and community environments: including logs and residual biomass (e.g. limbs, slash, needles). Woody biomass generated in Larimer County and along the Front Range primarily results from wildfire events, pest and disease spread, and the mitigation efforts aimed at addressing these issues.

Forest management and wildfire mitigation treatments are conducted for various reasons, to include the reduction of risk and mitigation of the wildfire hazard. The volume of woody biomass generated through these treatments can sometimes hamper the ability to perform these treatment efforts, impacting the efficiency and effectiveness of this work, especially when this work occurs at an increased pace and scale.
