Leave it to the Beavers: "When you can't leave it to beaver: Designing stream restoration projects to mimic and promote beaver activity"

  • New Belgium Brewing Co 500 Linden Street Fort Collins, CO, 80524 United States (map)

Beaver are a critical driver of ecological health in many riverscapes in the Western United States. Stream restoration that mimics and promotes beaver dam building is increasingly being promoted to address the impacts of climate change, mitigate wildfire and post-wildfire impacts, restore and protect fisheries, and improve productivity on working lands. In this presentation, I'm going to discuss how to plan, design, and implement stream restoration projects that mimic and promote natural beaver dam building.

About the Speaker

Scott Shahverdian, Design Geomorphologist, Riverscape Science and Stewardship, LLC

I am a fluvial geomorphologist and river restoration practitioner. I specialize in helping clients assess, plan, and design restoration projects on headwater streams, often through a suite of practices called low-tech process-based restoration. In addition to on-the-ground projects, I teach restoration workshops and work with a range of stakeholders to empower them to steward their riverscapes.”
