A main outcome of the Red Feather Lakes Area Wildfire Defense Project will be the reduction of hazardous fuels and restoration of fire-adapted ecosystems through wildfire mitigation treatments in open space, along roadways and on private properties. Funding from this grant is available to treat up to 10 miles of roadway. Progress will be measured by roadway, by year, and by CWPP community.
What is a roadway fuel treatment?
Roadway treatments are human-made changes in fuel characteristics that make roadways safer and more accessible for residents and firefighters.
Treatment Objectives:
Create a fuel break, potentially along a POD boundary, that can:
Reduce the intensity and interrupt the spread of wildfires
Create tactical opportunity for wildfire suppression (back burn, more effective aerial attack, contingency planning, etc.)
Enable proactive landscape management with prescribed burning
Provide more time for evacuations
AND/OR create safer conditions for residents and firefighters
AND/OR create greater accessibility/visibility for residents and firefighters
